A Pep Talk For The Girl Who Wants To Try New Things On The Internet

I bet you’ve had a similar experience to mine, the one where someone you love started talking negatively about a social media account you're drawing inspiration from. They looked at a feed, clicked a photo to see a low like count, and discredited the author without a second thought. They saw too many highlights and wrote the creator off as someone who has too much going on.

It might have left you thinking, “Well if my best friend thinks this is too small, if my best friend wrote this creator off as someone who isn’t credible because of feed metrics, what will they think when I go against the grain, start small or don’t get the same response as I do now….”

Oof have I literally been here. I think we have some options. Here are a few ways that you can take action that doesn't result in hasty comebacks or creative ruts-

  1. We can be grateful for inspiration! As creative, passionate women we absolutely should be following accounts that inspire us to keep going, use new colors, read a new genre, try a new product, attempt a new spiritual rhythm…the list goes on forever. Tell the human behind that account how inspired you are. Share with them something you tried because of them. Send them a DM to encourage them to keep going! This literally fights critique you don't agree with by celebrating people who are helping you along the way.

  2. We get to find value in new ideas and attempts from somewhere other than likes. It's super easy to feel like we are doing the “right” thing on social media when it returns likes to us after we post. It feels amazing to know it impacted a friend when she comments. We know our world is responding when they share our posts to their stories. The dopamine + serotonin smoothie is amazing! BUT you get to assign value because the author of your life already did. You don’t need validation from the insights list to tell you how well you're walking in your purpose. Let something as sacred as your purpose be so special that the only person you want to receive input about it from is Jesus. Strangers on the internet, even friends who don’t quite get your calling yet, don’t get to insight detours when you are so settled in what God has spoken to you.

  3. We can take a step in courage. Courage isn't a lack of fear, it's just not letting fear have the final say. Take a baby step today. Remind yourself of the courage you have access to! Sister the world needs the things God has placed in you to do!

If you took a step today, I would love to hear about it! Send me an email about the accounts you love, how you encouraged them, and even what dreams are in your heart that God is chatting with you about!
