What do I do when I think reading the Bible is boring?
The first thing to start with is understanding why you think it’s boring.
Ask yourself what comes to mind when you think about the word of God.
If you view scripture as a history book, as a set of rules, or as outdated stories then of course it would be hard to pick it up and stay motivated to understand more deeply.
Let’s start by trying to reframe the way we look at the word to start viewing it as God’s heart revealed to His kids. When we read scripture let’s look at it with the question “what does this tell me about God? What part of His character do I get to see today?”
I started making a list of every time God revealed His character while I was reading. I wrote down what people in the Bible said God was like, and what God said He was like. It helped me get a larger picture of Who I was talking to.
Scripture reminds us of where we came. If you are having a hard time reading, maybe try thinking about how your faith exists today because of the people in the Bible. Think of it like a big family tree and see how that impacts your time in the Word.
I went through a dry spell with my scripture reading a few months ago and I decided to start back in the psalms and proverbs. It was helpful to get back into a rhythm there but I would recommend adding in another book of the bible too.
You could also type in to google “Verses in the bible about ______” and do a treasure hunt for all the things Scripture says.
Ask the Lord to grow your desire for His word. He loves it when we want to be with Him.
Switch up where, when, how you’re reading.
Here are some tips
Change your location. Try a coffee shop, beside a lake, in your room, in the moring in a window that has sunrise light, with a candle, with some music in the background.
Try reading at different times till you find what fits. Morning devos help start our days off well, lunch break quiet time keeps us going, Before bed time we get to recap our days with the Father. What time works well for you?
How you’re reading might affect your time in the word too. Are you trying to reach a reading goal that is too lofty? Take the pressure off. Do you need to set a reading goal in the first place to keep you accountable? Do you need someone to recap what you just read? See my thoughts on the Bible Recap. Are you falling asleep while reading? Try going for a walk and listening to scripture on audio.
You’re not stuck in Jesus name.
